We’re proud to share that Toast has helped deliver a project recognised at the Plain Language Awards 2025, with Sorted’s Retirement Navigator taking out Best Plain Language Digital Tool.

Because behind this award is something simple, and powerful. Making complex things easier for people to understand.

Turning complexity into clarity

Money, especially retirement, can feel overwhelming. It is often filled with jargon, uncertainty, and decisions that carry real weight.

That was the challenge behind the Retirement Navigator.

Working alongside Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission, we helped bring to life a tool designed to guide people through one of life’s biggest financial transitions. Not with complexity, but with clarity. Not with pressure, but with confidence.

Here’s what the judges had to say:

The judges described the Retirement Navigator as an outstanding digital tool. It makes the complex and sensitive topic of retirement finance approachable and empowering. The tool combines clear language and thoughtful design to guide users with confidence.

The language is simple, precise, and conversational. It avoids jargon, and financial terms are explained in an accessible way. The judges also praised the tool’s intuitive structure, which guides users through the process with a clear progression.

The tool’s professional design uses clean layout and interactive elements like sliders and charts to help understanding. These features engage users without being overwhelming. The judges noted that extensive user testing helped to create a tool that sets a high standard for financial education and empowers people to make informed decisions.

This recognition is shared with the team at Te Ara Ahunga Ora, along with the wider group of contributors who helped bring the tool to life.

It is also a reminder of what happens when strategy, design, content and development work together. When clarity is not an afterthought, but the foundation.
